CAMAS, Wash. — A city councilmember for Camas was arrested Friday morning after allegedly throwing a rock and pointing a gun at a fisherman along the Washougal River Greenway.

John Vincent Svilarich, 66, was walking along the greenway trail over a pedestrian bridge when an argument ensued between him and a man fishing on Aug. 31. The argument escalated, and Svilarich threw an 8-inch rock from the bridge down to the fisherman below and shortly after "brandished a handgun" toward the man, Camas police said.

Officers interviewed both of them on the day of the argument and arrested Svilarich on Friday, following an investigation, Camas police said. Svilarich has been charged with reckless endangerment and aiming/discharging a firearm.

The handgun used has been surrendered to Camas police.

Svilarich was sworn into the city council on Jan. 2, and his term ends Dec. 31, 2027. According to his bio on the city of Camas's website, Svilarich joined the Camas community in 2002. He's currently serving on multiple committees as a city councilor, including parks and recreation.

"He loves our trails, parks and outdoor spaces. He can often be found along one of our many trails or rivers, walking his dog and enjoying nature," Svilarich's bio reads.
