Autopsies: Rainier man stabbed wife and son to death, then self

A Rainier man killed his wife and his 8-year-old son before killing himself Sunday night, according to the Oregon state medical examiner's office.
Police closed the street near the scene.

RAINIER, Ore. -- A Rainier man killed his estranged wife and his 8-year-old son before killing himself Sunday night, police said.

Officers found the bodies of 48-year-old Danny Abbott, 44-year-old Laury Abbott and their son, Danny Abbott Jr., after being called to a home on Fern Hill Loop at about 11 p.m. Sunday.

Danny Abbott died of self-inflicting cutting injuries, according to Dr. Larry Lewman of the medical examiner's office. His wife and son died of "multiple cutting and stabbing wounds," and their deaths were ruled homicides.

Columbia County District Attorney Steve Atchison said the bodies were discovered by another family member who called police.

Laury Abbott was separated from her husband and had not lived with him for several months, investigators said.

"Family members reported that Laury had expressed concerns for safety and was planning on filing for divorce," police said in a news release.

A neighbor told KGW that she heard very loud yelling coming from the home at around 11 p.m. Sunday.

"The voices were so loud, it was enough to wake me up with a fan going in our room," the neighbor said. "The only thing I heard clearly was a woman yelling, 'Look what you've done!'"

Police arrived about 15 minutes later and very loudly identified themselves, the neighbor said.

On Monday, the Rainier School District released a statement that said Danny was a student at Hudson Park Elementary School through August 2014. "He was a good friend to his classmates," the statement read.

The district was offering counseling services for any students or parents who needed helped dealing with the death of the young boy.
