FOREST GROVE, Ore. — At Taqueria Corona in downtown Forest Grove, owner Maritza Uribe Osorio is anxious to reopen her restaurant. It’s been closed since Oct. 30 after police said someone set fire to a dumpster behind the building.
The fire, which was ruled arson, damaged several utilities, including the gas line. Forest Grove Police arrested Teri Park, 48, for arson on Oct. 31.
“When I showed up, I saw the scene, the horrible scene,” Uribe Osorio said.
She had just returned from the grocery store with food and supplies for Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos parties, which she had to cancel.
“Food is super expensive right now,” Uribe Osorio said. “To have it in your hands and throw it away, it's not fair for me to work so hard and this happens.”
Worse than that, Uribe Osorio said she can't afford to pay her seven employees while the restaurant is closed. That includes Dallana Gutierez.
“I have rent and bills to pay, and I’m pregnant,” Gutierez said.
On top of everything, Uribe Osorio said earlier last month that someone broke into her restaurant and stole cash and liquor. Police confirmed they’re investigating that case as well.
“It's been crazy,” Uribe Osorio said.
A friend started a GoFundMe to help restaurant employees. Uribe Osorio said she’s thankful for the support she's already received and for her customers when they return. She hopes to reopen next week after crews repair the restaurant’s gas line.
“I cook for you. I want (the restaurant) to be like your house,” Uribe Osorio said.
