PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon is facing a $60 million lawsuit over two malnourished children who had been in foster care.
The Oregonian reports Danielle and John Yates are facing felony assault and criminal mistreatment charges after siblings placed in their home for 2 1/2 years were found severely underweight.
Oregon Department of Human Services officials declined to comment on the pending litigation. A state report confirms most of the facts in the lawsuit.
Oregon's new director of human services Clyde Saiki told lawmakers he fired chief operating officer Jerry Waybrant and child welfare director Lois Day as a result of the children's care.
Saiki, the state and eight others are named in the lawsuit.
The $60 million would be split between the siblings. Their court-appointed conservators say the children need extensive treatment.
