PORTLAND, Ore. -- The man who was killed in a shooting and crash in the Old Town neighborhood of Portland late Thursday night has been identified as 40-year-old Desmond A. Garrett.
Garrett was a resident of Portland, police said. The Oregon State Medical Examiner found Garrett died as a result of being struck by gunfire.
Police responding to the report of a shooting near Northwest 5th Avenue and Everett Street at around 10:20 p.m. on Sept. 7 found a crashed sedan with Garrett inside, suffering traumatic injuries.
Witnesses performed CPR to try to save Garrett's life but he died at the scene, according to Sgt. Chris Burley of the Portland Police Bureau.
Witnesses told investigators they had heard gunshots just before the sedan crashed into a small power box, and then crashed into a pickup truck. A man in the pickup was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
Officers found evidence of gunfire near Northwest 6th Avenue and Everett Street, including several bullet holes in a nearby building, Burley said. Evidence of more gunfire was found about half a block away.
No arrests have been made. Homicide detectives are investigating.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Detective Erik Kammerer at 503-823-0762.
