GRESHAM, Ore. — A Gresham man was arrested after shooting at his ex-girlfriend and her friend but unintentionally shooting another driver instead on Thursday evening.
Gresham Police and Multnomah County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to multiple calls about a shooting in the 3100 block of Northeast Cleveland Avenue before 6:30 p.m. A caller told dispatchers that "approximately 20 shots" were fired, according to a probable cause document filed in Multnomah County.
Witnesses said that the suspect Kelvin Pea, 31, of Gresham, shot a stolen firearm at a car, which had "two people with whom he had an ongoing dispute," Gresham Police said.
The gunfire struck a driver in the thigh, who was waiting at a red light at Stark and Cleveland. His wife and his three young children in the car, police said. The man, who has not been identified, was able to flee the intersection, and his wife transported him to a hospital. He had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
According to police, the two people Pea had intended to shoot at, Shanna Turner and Yudie Lewis, were able to escape the area and flag down officers. They were both uninjured, police said, though their car had been struck by gunfire.
Lewis told officers that she was scared that Pea was trying to kill her, as he'd previously made such threats over the phone and through texting, according to a probable cause document. She said that earlier, while she and Turner were sitting in the car, Pea began arguing with Turner and making threats to shoot them, grabbing at his front waistband, where a pistol was located.
Turner, a security guard, had recently reported that her work-issued firearm had been stolen by Pea; he had sent her photos of himself holding the pistol.
Turner told officers about recent incidents between herself and Pea, including her suspicions that Pea had previously slashed her tires.
She said she and Lewis had been in the area that day to make a report against Pea to the Portland Police Bureau. While Turner was on the phone inside her car with an officer, Pea was walking outside as she drove by. The two then began "to argue and made threats towards each other" before Pea pulled out the pistol and began firing as Turner sped away, court documents said.
Pea told officers that Lewis and Turner had been "harassing and threatening" him the past few weeks, saying that Turner had been the one to shoot at him Thursday evening but later admitted that he had shot at the car as it sped away. He also confirmed he'd fired the gun stolen from Lewis. Pea also showed past text messages between him and Turner, which contained threats and Turner appearing to hold a pistol during a Facetime call, court documents said.
Pea said he was "afraid Turner and Lewis were going to kill him, and that he was afraid of going back to prison." Pea had been convicted of attempted robbery in the second degree in Multnomah County on Oct. 15, 2015, according to the court document.
Turner and Lewis denied neither of them had a gun during the shooting, according to the probable cause document.
Pea was taken to Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder, second-degree assault, felon in possession of a firearm, four counts of recklessly endangering another person, and first-degree theft of a firearm.
