PORTLAND, Oregon — Ah, yes. Another weekend of social distancing. Have you gotten used to it yet? Figured out fun and relaxing ways to spend your weekend, while still staying safe?
If not, don't worry. We have ideas. It's the first weekend of May, which means it's been over a month since the stay-home orders began in Oregon and Washington. So local businesses have figured out awesome ways to connect and have fun, while still keeping safety as the priority.
Whether you want to learn a new skill, watch a movie, drink beer, or get your silent disco on, there is something fun for you to do.
So here are 8 things to do from home this weekend:
Celebrate science with OMSI and KGW
On Saturday night, science lovers of all ages can get together, virtually, for a live event. For a full hour, there will be science demos, cool explosions, and a sneak peek and some new exhibits coming when OMSI reopens to the public.
OMSI: Celebrating Science starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Watch on KGW on TV, or any of our streaming channels.
Attend a virtual beer festival
Stay Home, Drink Beer! Perhaps that's what you've already been doing for the past few weeks... but now there's a whole festival for it! The Oregon Brewers Guild has put together a virtual beer fest, featuring live chats with Oregon brewers, guided brewery tours, and even a Bob Ross-style painting activity. The event starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday - get your ticket here for $5.
Go to a drive-up movie
The Sunshine Mill in The Dalles is showing movies on Friday and Saturday nights. It's drive-up style, so you and your family stay in the car to watch. On Friday night's, the movies are picked for adults, and then kid friendly films are shown on Saturdays. The venue has also partnered with Freebridge Brewing to deliver pizzas to your car upon request. And you can order Sunshine Mill wine to take home with you.
Movie tickets are $15 per car. See the full schedule on the Sunshine Mill website and Facebook page.
Learn how to play banjo and slide guitar
Tony Furtado is a Portland-based musician who's been playing the banjo since he was 12 years old. Now, every Sunday, he's live streaming a banjo and slide guitar lesson on Facebook. Tune in at 1 p.m. on Sunday to learn a new skill!

"Go" to a concert
The Alberta Rose Theatre is live streaming concerts featuring local musicians five nights a week, April 23 through May 17. Tune in Wednesdays through Sundays at 7 p.m. to see a variety of performers on the Portland Music Stream. Pay $20 to stream one show, or $100 for all twenty concerts.
This Saturday, Edna Vasquez is performing a solo concert. Read more about her and buy your ticket here.
Eat at one of Vitaly Paley's restaurants again
The James Beard Award-winning chef is back! Well, at one of his restaurants, at least. Vitaly Paley closed all of his restaurants back on March 15, right before Oregon's stay at home order began. But starting May 1, one of them is back in business. The Crown is serving up pizzas, sandwiches, and pastas, all for curbside pickup.
Go to the farmers market
The Portland Farmers Market is back open, and doing its best to keep everyone safe. On Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., you can shop at the PSU Farmers Market. No sampling is allowed, due to the pandemic, and you still need to maintain distance from other shoppers. If possible, only have one person from your household go to the market, to reduce the number of shoppers. See the Portland Farmers Market website for dates and times of the other locations.
Join a virtual silent disco
If you've never attended a silent disco, it's probably for one of two reasons:
- You've never heard of a silent disco
- You're nervous to silently dance in front of other people
If you're in the first category, a silent disco is exactly what it sounds like. A dance party, but silent. Participants wear headphones, so you are dancing to actual music, but anyone without headphones hears nothing (I tried it on live TV once... it was awkward, but a great time).
If it's your nerves that have kept you from silent disco-ing, maybe the virtual version will make it easier. You can dance like no one's watching - because it's actually true this time.
On Sundays at 6 p.m., Heartbeat Silent Disco is live streaming the party on Twitch.
Cassidy Quinn is the host of Tonight With Cassidy on KGW. But right now, like many of you, she is working from home, trying to focus on the happier things going on in the world. Tonight With Cassidy is currently on hiatus, but you can watch previous segments from the show here, and follow Cassidy on Twitter @CassidyQuinn.
