A Southeast Portland Dad wants other fathers and their kids to join him Saturday at Oaks Park.
Melvyn Baker's support group for single dads, called Breaking CyclesDad's Group will give free ride bracelets out to those who register through Facebook.
It s tough being both the mom and dad. We need to help each other out, said Baker.
He started Breaking Cycles at Harrison Park School in Southeast Portland. Baker said he'd like to find more members.
When my wife died, I was heartbroken. I didn t really share with anybody. I shut myself off emotionally, he said.
It was John Walden, the Principal at Harrison Park, who offered the school as meeting space for the twice-monthly get-togethers.
They bring their emotions in and they re really learning about their situations. The amount of engagement has been huge, said Walden.
Baker worked with the nonprofit Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME) to cover the cost of the Oaks Park event. He wanted to inspire other dads to do what he makes a habit of.
Get out and explore with your kids. Take them to the beach, the mountains. Let them see what you and Oregon have to offer, Baker said.
