PORTLAND The man accused of killing a Portland woman on Christmas day appeared in court Monday to face 17 charges in connection with the murder.
The suspect, 37-year-old Michael James Kirkland, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Portland after 33-year-old Jaime Larson was found dead in her apartment on Southwest Park Avenue.

Kirkland was jailed without bail on three counts of aggravated murder. But a grand jury indictment listed 14 additional charges against him.
The indictment accused Kirkland of using a sock to choke and kill Larson. He was also accused of burglary, rape, sodomy and of mutilating Larson's body.
Investigators did not say whether the two had known each other. Kirkland's criminal record showed prior felony and misdemeanor assault convictions.
