GRESHAM -- A Gresham man died Tuesday after his car was struck by a man speeding on U.S. 26 near 267th Avenue.

Donald M. Bard, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident shortly after noon.

A Gresham officer observing traffic spotted a westbound black Mercedes traveling at least 100 mph, police said. A pursuit started, but before the officer could get close, the car had crashed into a Mazda driven by Bard at Hillyard Road.

Prior to the collision, dispatchers received reports of a speeding black Mercedes as far east as Sandy.

The man in the Mercedes was pulled from his burning car by the pursuing officer and bystanders. The officer cut his hands breaking the car window. He was treated at the hospital and was expected to return to duty.

The driver, Sun Bear Raven, 36, of Gresham, was taken to Legacy Emanuel hospital in serious condition.

Police said excessive speed and reckless driving led to the wreck. No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation.

Raven was driving with a suspended license stemming from a variety of infractions including DUII.
