PORTLAND, Ore. — A list of locations set to be divested under the pending merger between supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons was released, and it includes 186 Safeway, Albertsons, QFC and Haggen stores across Oregon and Washington.
Kroger and Albertsons announced their planned merger in October 2022. The companies said it's necessary so they can better compete with Walmart, Amazon and other big rivals.
In February, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued to block the $24.6 billion merger between the grocery giants, saying the lack of competition would lead to higher grocery prices and lower wages for workers. Oregon joined several states in a lawsuit over the merger.
Then in April, Kroger and Albertsons said they'd sell 579 of their stores in an effort to quell the government's concerns about their proposed merger. The locations would be divested to New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers.
