Fred Meyer to close SE Portland location

Fred Meyer is closing its doors at the Southeast 82nd Avenue and Foster Road location.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Fred Meyer is closing its doors at the Southeast 82nd Avenue and Foster Road location.

The grocery and home goods chain confirmed the news to KGW on Wednesday. A spokesman for the store said it will remain open through the holidays and close either on or around Jan. 20, 2018.

"Today Fred Meyer made the difficult decision to close the underperforming store at 5253 SE 82nd Avenue in Portland," said spokesman Jeffrey Temple. "The decision to close this location was based on long-term business performance and forecasts."

Temple said the fuel center will stay open at the location. He also said all employees will be offered a job at a different Fred Meyer location.

The closure leaves a void in the Southeast Portland community, although there are a few other full-service grocery options nearby.

A Fred Meyer in Happy Valley is about two miles south, and a WinCo Foods in Southeast Portland is about one mile north. A Walmart Supercenter is about two-thirds of a mile north, on Southeast Holgate Boulevard.

The closure will not likely create an urban "food desert," as defined by the USDA, where at least 500 people would have to live more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store.
