Salem airport offers commercial airline service for first time in 15 years

Avelo Airlines is offering commercial flights from Salem to Las Vegas and Los Angeles County. Introductory one-way fares start at $39.

SALEM, Ore. — For the first time in 15 years, Salem Municipal Airport (SLE) will offer commercial airline service. On Thursday, Avelo Airlines announced it will offer nonstop service from Salem to Las Vegas and Burbank, California in Los Angeles County.

Introductory one-way fares will start as low as $39 for fares booked by July 26 through Dec. 15. Tickets are on sale now at AveloAir.com.

Flights from SLE to Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) will begin Oct. 5, 2023 on will be offered on Thursday and Sunday. Flights from SLE to Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) begin Oct. 6, 2023 and will be offered on Friday and Monday. The flight days from SLE to BUR will change on Nov. 2 to Thursday and Sunday.

Avelo Airlines uses Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircrafts, the company said in a news release.

Avelo Airlines started on April 28, 2021. The airline has 16 total aircrafts and a company spokesperson said it plans to add four to six more by the end of the first quarter of 2024. The company has more than 9,000 employees, and in its two-plus years of existence, has flown more than 2.5 million customers on more than 20,000 flights.

"We're new to Salem, but we're not new to flying," said Courtney Goff, communications manager for Avelo Airlines, during a news conference Thursday morning at SLE.

"This is a bright day for Salem’s future," said Salem Mayor Chris Hoy in a news release. "Commercial passenger air service will make investing in our city easier and will make the world a little more accessible for our residents who travel. This win-win was made possible through much community collaboration and dedication of our city staff."
