PORTLAND, Ore. — A recently opened Mediterranean restaurant on Northwest 23rd Avenue announced that it's closing its doors after just one year.
Zula opened nextdoor to Grassa in May 2023. Its mix of Moroccan, Greek, Lebanese, and Iranian-influenced dishes and cocktails quickly made its mark on social media as a new trendy food spot in Portland. That and its location on one of Portland's most heavily-traversed streets for the restaurant and bar-hopping devotee all leaned toward it becoming a mainstay.
But, in what may be a shock to many, the restaurant announced on social media Sunday that it will be closing its doors permanently.
"We appreciate the opportunity to have served you and dined with you," Zula said in an Instagram post. "We want to thank Zula’s incredibly devoted and passionate staff — you are the heart of what made Zula so special."
Zula's menu took inspiration from the diversity of dishes found in Tel Aviv, where the owners were born and spent several years cooking. Its menu offered a fun mix of Mediterranean influenced dishes, from its spreads to skewers to small plates, that all perfectly complimented their craft cocktails.
"We are so grateful for what Zula was and the experiences it gave us, and we hope to see you on the flip side," Zula said.
