PORTLAND, Oregon — Salt & Straw and Taco Bell are collaborating on new spin on a discontinued ice cream treat with a passionate following.
The Portland ice cream chain and fast food giant plan to bring their ice cream chocolate tacos to all Salt & Straw locations this summer. The frozen treat is a riff on the Choco Taco by Klondike, which was retired by the company last year.
Salt & Straw co-founder Tyler Malek announced the collaboration at Taco Bell's Live Mas Live marketing event.
"Yesterday our head ice cream maker was at Live Más Live to announce the return of our iconic Ice Cream Chocolate Tacos in collaboration with Taco Bell," Salt & Straw said in an Instagram post. "Coming this summer to all scoop shops and online for nationwide shipping. Hand-pressed waffle cones, fresh-made cinnamon ancho ice cream dipped in single origin chocolate and studded with toasted brown rice."
Malek told the Oregonian, which reported the collaboration Monday, that he and his cousin and co-founder Kim Malek were approached by new Taco Bell CEO Sean Tresvant, who knew Salt & Straw from a stint at Nike, where he was chief marketing officer for the Jordan Brand until 2021.
"This is the most delicious thing you'll eat in your entire life," Malek said in a video from the Taco Bell event shared by Salt & Straw on Instagram.
