Kid science: How to DIY a lava lamp at home

Stuck at home? Have your kids learn some fun science while making this lava lamp out of simple items you likely already have in your pantry.

PORTLAND, Ore — If you're a parent stuck at home with your kids, by this point, you may feel like you've tried everything to entertain them. You also might have spent so much time in your house that you're sick of every single piece of decor.

So why not have your kids try to make a new decoration for the living room?

Ok, admittedly, this might not be exactly what you want on display for years to come (you might want a lava lamp not made out of a water bottle for that, just a guess). But this one will at least be fun to make, and teach your kids some fun science lessons!

This tutorial comes from Science Fun, a site that has tons of kid science experiments for your time at home.

Here's what you need for this lava lamp experiment:

  • A clean plastic bottle with smooth sides
  • Water
  • Vegetable Oil (you can also use mineral or baby oil if that's what you have instead)
  • Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer)
  • Food coloring

Watch the video below to see the experiment in action, and learn how it works!

She's not a kid, but since she's definitely a kid at heart, she loves kid projects like this one.
