SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Portland Trail Blazers legend Bill Walton now has his very own statue commemorating his love of cycling.
The bronze statue was unveiled Saturday at San Diego’s Ski Beach Park. It stands 6-foot-11 and weighs 1,200 pounds.
The sculpture was created by Alison Brown, who has crafted monuments to college mascots, including the University of Oregon Duck, on campuses around the country. Brown was recommended for the Walton project by former UO Athletic Director Pat Kilkenny, who had seen her previous work for Nike founder Phil Knight.
Walton, who is a life-long cycling enthusiast, played for the Portland Trail Blazers and won a World Championship in 1977. He also played for the San Diego Clippers and Boston Celtics, where he won another championship. Walton was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players.
