Rod on the Road: Monks brewing beer at the Mount Angel Abbey

KGW's Rod Hill caught up with the head brewer at the Benedictine Brewery. The monk operated taproom has been open for a year.

MT ANGEL, Ore. — It's been just over a year since the Benedictine monks at the Mt. Angel Abbey entered the beer business. KGW meteorologist Rod Hill visited the grounds in his finest beer-drinking attire to the learn the secret behind this blessed beverage.

Head brewer Fr. Martin Grassel says brewing beer is a long-standing monastic tradition dating back to the 11th century. In fact, two of the oldest continuously operating breweries in the world were started by Benedictine monks.

But what makes this beer unique? Fr. Martin says the secret is simple, "My special ingredient is prayer. Before we brew a batch of beer, before we keg it, any step of the process, we bless it."

You can visit the Benedictine Brewery and adjoining St. Michael Taproom at 400 Humpert Lane NE, Mt. Angel, OR.
