PORTLAND, Oregon — The Portland Jazz Festival is a two-week celebration of jazz at over 30 venues across the Portland-area. The festival includes nationally recognized artists like Grammy-award winners Jon Batiste, Diane Reeves and Nicholas Payton, and they also showcase local talents like the band called 'greaterkind.'
The Portland-based band, 'greaterkind,' is made up of three friends: Charlie Brown (keyboards), Cory Limuaco (drums) and Peter Knudsen (guitar/bass/vocals). They’re on a community-inspired mission to "spread love and inclusivity through music" and hope to envision a 'greaterkind' of community. Their music pulls from elements of jazz fusion and funk music, and blends with hints of R&B, gospel, and hip-hop. Their style is rooted in improvisation, which brings a creative and unique energy to their shows.
The members of 'greaterkind' have worked with many artists across genres including Portland rapper Aminé , Ghost-Note, The Hamiltones, Jarrod Lawson, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (formerly known as Christian Scott), Saeeda Wright and many more in Portland-area.
'greaterkind' plans to release their debut album titled "Change of Plans" this spring. It’s the band’s first collective effort, and will feature other artists such as Lo Steele, Hailey Niswanger, Jarrod Lawson, and Domo Branch.
The band 'greaterkind' will close out the opening night of the Portland Jazz Festival with a show at the Jack London Revue on Feb. 16 at 11 p.m.
