Gresham-based musician talks about her debut solo album and working with former Rush guitarist

Maiah Wynne talked with KGW about her career, working with Alex Lifeson of Rush, and debuting her first solo album.

PORTLAND, Oregon — Maiah Wynne is a singer-songwriter based in Gresham, Oregon. She’s a solo-artist and the lead singer of Envy of None, performing alongside former Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson.

Wynne was discovered by Envy of None during a music competition. One of the judges of that competition was Andy Curran from the band Coney Hatch. Curran describes Wynne as a “real gift” and “a diamond in the rough.” Curran began working with Wynne and connected her with Alex Lifeson, and they all collaborated on a project that would become Envy of None.

Wynne calls Envy of None “her Canadian brothers” and says she’s grateful for the guidance and collaboration she’s found in them. According to the band’s website, Lifeson says “Maiah became my muse,” adding that he’d “never had that kind of inspiration working with another musician.”

Wynne is a singer with a unique voice, and an even more unique skillset. She owns and plays over 50 instruments, and plays many of them simultaneously.

Her upcoming album, “Out of the Dark,” is the culmination of over 10 years of work. Some of the songs featured are ones she began writing when she was just 16 years old, Wynne said.

“Out of the Dark” is a 12-track album, all self-written and self-produced by Wynne. She plans to release the album this summer, and it is available for pre-order on her website, MaiahWynne.com.

Wynne performed two songs off her upcoming album live in the KGW Studio. Her songs "Butterfly" and "Come On" speak to the themes of her album. To Wynne, butterflies represent being underestimated, and delicate beauty. "Come On" was written when she was 16, and represents hope during a period of self-discovery.
