Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana, Kenton Street Fair 2024, PDX Soap Box Derby and more to do this weekend across Portland

This weekend brings an array of celebrations across town, from the Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana to the Foo Fighters concert, Sunflower fest and much more.

PORTLAND, Ore. — We have officially hit the middle of August, which means we're close to the final stretch of summer! With many festivities across town and celebrations, there are a ton of options to fill up your weekend.

Here's what else is happening around Portland: Dahlia Festival, PDX Soap Box Derby, Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square and PDX Live concert series, Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana, and much more on our list of events to attend this weekend.

Dahlia Festival

When: Every Wednesday – Sunday, through Sept. 29, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Where: Swan Island Dahlias, 995 Northwest 22nd Avenue, Canby, Ore.
What's going on: Get your camera and allergy meds ready! With over 40 acres of dahlias featuring over 370 varieties, anyone can sign up for flower arranging and crafts classes, listen to flower care lectures, take a bunch of flowers home, and more.

PDX Soap Box Derby

When: Aug. 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
Where: Mt. Tabor Park, Portland, Ore.
What's going on: Each year, adults across the metro area plummet down a winding Mt. Tabor road in wheeled machines of their own making. Participants have the chance to build their own contraptions — some built for speed, others made for chaos. The event is free to watch, but organizers do ask for donations to keep the tradition going for years to come.

PDX Live Concert Series

When: Now-Aug. 21
Where: Pioneer Courthouse Square, 701 Southwest 6th Avenue, Portland, Ore.
What's going on: Portland's popular outdoor concert series is underway in downtown Portland. The series kicked off earlier this month and closes out Aug. 21 with a stellar lineup, including Mt. Joy, Waxahatchee, Alvvays, and Sunny Day Real Estate.

Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana 

When: Aug. 16, 17, 18
Where: Legion Park, 1385 Park Avenue, Woodburn, Ore.

What's going on: For over 60 years, the Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana has celebrated the end of the harvest and expressed the community's gratitude to its farmers and workers. People from across Oregon come to celebrate and enjoy cultural dancing and music. The fiesta will also feature Lucha Libre wrestling, carnival rides, food, soccer and much more. It will be free all day Friday and free Saturday and Sunday until 5 p.m. A $5 charge will apply after for ages 10+.

Foo Fighters concert

When: Aug. 16
Where: Providence Park, 1844 Southwest Morrison Street, Portland, Ore.
What's going on: The rock band Foo Fighters will perform at the stadium in Southwest Portland on Aug. 16. They're wrapping up their "Everything or Nothing At All" tour in North America. General admission tickets for the pit area are still available, as of Wednesday, according to Providence Park's website

Leach Botanical Garden's 40th Anniversary Celebration

When: Aug. 17, 18 
Where: Leach Botanical Garden, 6704 Southeast 122nd, Portland, Ore.
What's going on: This weekend, Leach Botanical Garden celebrates its 40th-anniversary with a botanical art fundraiser, site tours, arborist talks and live flute music. If you've never visited Leach Botanical Garden, you may have missed it: a hidden urban oasis tucked away in Southeast Portland. The 16-acre oasis holds a historic manor house, concerts, classes, and over 2,000 plant species.

Kenton Street Fair 2024

When: Aug. 18
Where: Paul Bunyan Statue, 8334 North Denver Avenue, Portland, Ore.
What's going on: North Portland’s historic Kenton neighborhood is throwing its annual street fair this weekend. There will be over 80 vendors and live performances across multiple stages. Bring the entire family for a day of fun near the shadow of Paul Bunyan's statue.

Lee Farms Sunflower Festival

When: Aug. 2-18
Where: 21975 Southwest 65th Avenue, Tualatin, Ore. 97062
What's going on: This annual Sunflower Festival offers many varieties of sunflowers (and other flowers!) to learn about and explore. You can also cut your own blooms, wander the more-than-120 acres of family farmland, enjoy a scenic hayride to the sunflower maze, visit farm animals, and enjoy various foods and beverages with some live music from Pacific Northwest artists.
