SISTERS, Ore. — Hoodoo Ski Area announced that its annual New Year's Eve Celebration has been canceled. The ski resort said there has been a lack of adequate snow base for skiing and riding.

This year, ski season in Oregon has been off to a slow start as a pattern of warm weather and high snow levels persist this month. Multiple ski resorts have had to delay their scheduled opening days.

"Hoodoo's management is hopeful that weather patterns will change soon, allowing Central Oregon's oldest ski area to finally open for the 2023-24 ski season," the ski resort said in a news release Thursday morning.

The ski resort is posting the latest updates on mountain conditions on its website and social media pages.

Which Oregon ski resorts are open and closed?

Here's a look at some of the ski resorts that have opened for the season or are still closed, as of Dec. 28.

What's open: Timberline Lodge, Mount Bachelor and Mount Hood Meadows.

What's closed: Hoodoo Ski Area, Willamette Pass, Skibowl, Mount Ashland and Anthony Lakes Mountain.

One of Portland's warmest Decembers ever

The warmer than usual temperatures are not only impacting ski resorts. With just a few days left this month, it's shaping up to be one of Portland's warmest Decembers ever recorded.

The mean temperature this month at Portland International Airport (PDX) is 46.1 degrees. That's about 4.5 degrees above normal, according to KGW Meteorologist Chris McGinness. It's also the second warmest average temperature recorded, and records at PDX stretch back to 1941. On average, PDX hits 60 degrees once in December. This year, there have been three 60-degree days, including when PDX hit 67 on Dec. 4.

The month's not over yet, but no matter the final rankings, it will go down as one of Portland's warmest December's ever. #ElNino #kgwweather
