Not only is it Batman day but 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the character.
Many know and loved the caped crusader as Bruce Wayne but many people have worn the cowl. Here is a list of all (read: most) of the people who have been Batman.
Bruce Wayne
The man, the myth, the legend with unresolved parental issues.
Alfred Pennyworth
Al has filled in as Batman a number of times! And let’s face it, 90% if the time Al is the real hero for getting Bruce Wayne back on his feet.
Clark Kent
That’s right! Back in the day when Batsy and Supes used to star in the same World’s Finest Comics together, they would often pose as one another for some silly plot lines. Wow, what a world?
Damian Wayne
Damian was also Robin, he’s Bruce biological son with Talia Al Ghul – yes as in the villain in The Dark Knight. He in the Batman in a future world and is a little more uh… dark? You can read about that in Batman #666.
Dick Grayson
Dick was Robin for a time, fighting alongside Bruce Wayne. But as he became an adult he got his own persona which is what he is best known as, Nightwing. He became Batman twice.
Hugo Strange
A villain who learned of Bruce Wayne’s identity as Batman and later became a more ruthless Batman until they fought one another in their Batsuits. Think that meme of the two Spider-Men pointing at one another but bats instead.
Jason Todd
The angriest of Bruce’s adopted sons. He was the second Robin after Dick. He was a little fast and loose at Batman and died. He was later resurrected in a thing called the Lazarus pit which made him a little, uh… stressed? Tense? Now he is known as Red Hood.
Jean-Paul Valley
Known as Azrael, Jean-Paul puts on the cowl after Bane breaks Batman’s back. He isn’t a very good Batman, though, and is replaced by Wayne’s adopted circus son Dick Grayson.
Jim Gordon
Commissioner Jim Gordon took up the cowl after Batman “died.” We all know how that goes in comics.
Terry McGinnis
You may remember him from Batman Beyond! In the show, Terry finds Bruce as an old man who trains him up and gives him all sorts of fun tech. He also exists in comics which spun off from the show.
Thomas Wayne
Yes, that’s right, Bruce Wayne’s dead dad was Batman. This is hard to explain if you’re not a comics person. But basically Flash went back in time and changed history. This is called the “Flashpoint.” In that, Bruce is murdered in front of his parents instead of the other way around. Martha has a breakdown from grief and becomes the Joker and Thomas becomes Batman. Phew, what a mix-up!
Tim Drake
Another one of Batman’s basically adopted sons. Tim was the third Robin to fight alongside Bruce. He has replaced Bruce as Batman in a few storylines.
This list is long but there are other people who have been Batman! The list goes on and it will continue to grow. But it begs the question, who is your favorite Batman?
