PORTLAND, Ore. — This week I learned that we never really grow out of feeling our emotions as intensely as we did as teenagers, we just get a little numb to them maybe. I also learned about a prolific serial killer I had never heard of! Let's talk comics!
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me
Writer: Mariko Tamaki
Illustrator: Rosemary Valero-O'Connell
Published by: First Second
Seventeen-year-old Freddy's girlfriend, Laura Dean, keeps breaking up with her and yet Freddy can't seem to stop herself from going back to Laura. This story has incredibly dynamic LGBTQIA+ characters that make for an inclusive story without strain (which is how they should all be, in my opinion.) Ultimately, this story is a look at what happens when we stay in relationships that hurt us. Spoiler alert: we hurt the people around us.
I cannot recommend this book enough.
The Butcher of Paris
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Dean Kotz
Colorist: Jason Wordie
Cover Artist: Dave Johnson
Pick up this comic if you want to learn about a prolific serial killer you've probably never heard of. I know I hadn't. Marcel Petiot was responsible for a possible 200 deaths during WWII. He preyed on Jews looking to escape Nazi-occupied France, which makes him a real monster. Writer Stephanie Phillips has researched this case extensively and I, as someone who enjoys true crime, am excited to learn more.

Before you go, one more thing! The KGW Great Toy Drive is going on and we are trying to give 50,000 toys to local kiddos in need. If you can donate please visit kgwtoy.com/wishlist.
