What do you get when you mix classic horror monsters with a down-on-her-luck TV news reporter?
A weird Saturday night, maybe.
But definitely Dark Horse’s comic County Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter.
Written by actor David Dastmalchian, who you may know from movies like "Ant-Man" and "The Dark Knight" and illustrated by Portland-based artist Lukas Ketner, Count Crowley takes classic horror themes and turns them on their heads.
The protagonist, Jerri Bartman, sets off to become a big-time cable news investigative reporter. After being attacked by a coworker, and disgraced when she tries to come forward about it, she goes to work at her brother’s small cable station as she spirals.
She agrees to be a creature feature host, to replace the one who has seemingly gone missing, but putting on the makeup helps her find her kick-butt attitude.
But the old host wasn’t missing. Of course, he wasn’t. He was one of the last appointed monster hunters and suddenly Jerri is thrust into that world. She has to fight real-life monsters as she battles her own inner ones.
If you like classic horror and flawed characters you can pick up Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter at your local comic book shop on Oct. 23!
I’ll be reviewing it on the KGW Comic Pick of the Week YouTube channel and I look forward to chatting with you about it.
