PORTLAND, Ore. — Thomas Shults is a multi-skilled journalist and reporter for KGW News, specializing in general assignment reporting. He joined the team in May 2023.

Thomas grew up in Asheville, North Carolina before going to college at Syracuse University where he majored in Broadcast Digital Journalism and Political Science.

Originally, he planned on a career in sports journalism before pivoting to news during the COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd protests. Once he graduated college in 2021, Thomas started his career in Panama City, Florida. There he covered some of the most severe wildfires the state had ever seen, tornadoes and riots. Thomas talked to people whose homes were destroyed and were trying to pick up their lives.

He also helped break the news of a former Panama City government employee stealing more than a million dollars in government funds.

Thomas is excited to get to know Portland residents and begin reporting on stories that matter.

When he isn’t reporting, Thomas loves to hike with friends, try new restaurants and explore the community he lives in! He’s also an avid sports fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Tennessee Volunteers.
