John Tierney is the News Director at KGW News, a position he started in July 2024.
John was born and raised in the Portland area and grew up watching KGW. He first joined the station in 2014 to lead the station’s investigative, political and special projects teams. In 2018, he was promoted to Assistant News Director, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the newsroom.
John has worked at several television stations and a newspaper in Oregon over the past two decades and is passionate about covering local news in his home state.
He grew up in the Cedar Mill area of Washington County. He graduated from Sunset High School before heading south to the University of Oregon, where he studied newspaper and broadcast journalism.
John is married to another Portland-area native. They have two young boys who keep them very busy. Outside of work and wrangling kids, John enjoys traveling with his wife, golf and cooking.
