PORTLAND, Ore. — Alma McCarty is a multi-skilled journalist and reporter for KGW News. She joined the team in October 2021.
Alma grew up outside of Detroit, Michigan before moving to the Atlanta, Georgia area in high school. Her time in news kept her on the east coast until now – so, she’s completely new to Portland and the Pacific Northwest.
She didn’t know that journalism was a passion right away – although reading the morning announcements for the entire school in fifth grade was certainly a childhood highlight. Alma decided to seriously pursue broadcast news after listening to professors and mentors at the University of Georgia gush about the excitement and chaos of the business. While studying at UGA, she helped report, anchor and produce the school’s local news program.
She began her career after graduating with a degree Broadcast Journalism in 2014. Alma spent two years as a reporter in Augusta, Georgia at WRDW News 12, before heading to Greensboro, North Carolina to report for WFMY News 2 in 2017. She’s met some incredible people willing to share their stories along the way.
Alma considers this job a true privilege – and cannot wait to meet the people of Portland and beyond!
When she isn’t reporting, Alma enjoys reading, trying new restaurants, and getting outside to run, walk and hike. She’s excited to explore the city and surrounding areas! The mountain views are a welcome sight.
