PORTLAND, Ore. — KGW, a TEGNA Inc. station, has won three awards in the 2019 RTDNA Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. The prestigious competition recognizes outstanding journalism in thirteen geographical regions in the United States and one international region.

KGW competed in region one, which includes the five states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. KGW earned the most awards of any Portland television station.

Best multimedia

KGW won for its overall digital content strategy and success at reaching audiences across its various digital platforms. KGW’s multimedia work encompasses investigative long-form content across a variety of topics as well as the broad variety of storytelling surrounding major issues and breaking news produced for our digital audiences each day. KGW.com employs a rich mix of live-streaming video, interactive stories and user-generated content to serve the audience.

Excellence in social media

KGW uses social media as a key part of its digital journalism. Whether live-streaming on Facebook or YouTube, using Twitter for key breaking news reporting or telling stories through Instagram or Instagram TV, KGW has incorporated the community into its reporting and newsroom mission. The result has been significant audience growth and engagement in KGW’s four major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube), with a combined following growing more than 50 percent in the past year alone.

Best reporting: sports

KGW was recognized for best sports reporting for a story by investigative reporter Cristin Severance and photographer Gene Cotton. The story, “Is This the End of High School Football in Oregon,” examined statewide participation numbers that show a sharp decline in the number of kids playing football. Interviews with kids who sustained concussions, parents who pulled their children from the game, experts and veteran coaches tell a compelling, impactful story about the trend.
