MAX train crash: Train operator hospitalized, 2 passengers hurt

The operator of the train was taken to the hospital. Two passengers were evaluated for minor injuries at the scene.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. — A train operator was taken to the hospital and two passengers were injured when a TriMet MAX train failed to stop and crashed into a concrete barrier at the end of the Southeast Park Avenue station in Milwaukie on Friday morning.

TriMet said the operator of the train was taken to the hospital and two passengers on the train were evaluated at the scene for minor injuries.

According to a news release from Clackamas Fire, one of the passengers on the train said he slept through the crash.

The crash happened on the MAX Orange Line. The MAX Orange and Yellow lines experienced delays for about three and a half hours due to the removal of the crashed train, TriMet said.

Following an on-site inspection of the incident, TriMet took the train out of service and into one of their facilities for further analysis. In a message Friday afternoon, TriMet said despite the crash, there was no risk the train could have continued past the barrier and into the street.

"The MAX system is equipped with several safety elements that would prevent that," said Roberta Altstadt, a spokesperson.

The station where the crash happened is located in the area of Southeast Park Avenue, between McLoughlin Boulevard and 27th Avenue, in Milwaukie.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
