PORTLAND, Ore. -- People living near SE 26th Avenue and Caruthers in Portland woke up with a start around five o’clock Saturday morning.
“It was like a lot of wind, then a big crack,” after that, Charley Wheelock said a piece of a large tree came down right on top of the home right across the street.
Fortunately no one was hurt. Neighbors said the damaged home is a rental that houses a number of people.
David Browne, who lives right next door, said he’s also counting his blessings.
“These very top branches here just barely grazed our fence,” said David Browne as he motioned toward his home, located right next door.
There was no question, the wind caused some early-morning chaos but by the afternoon hours in Downtown Portland, one tourist from New England actually welcomed the rain and wind.
“I just left four sequential nor’easters. So this isn't anything. I'll take it actually,” said Kalila Borghini.
Further out on the coast, wind was whipping up there for some of the day, but some people weren't sure what might be in store later.
“I don't know sometimes they say it will be windy and nothing happens and sometimes you don't hear and then boom,” said Sandra Meyer, who was visiting from Seattle.
Back in Southeast Portland, neighbors reflected on the day’s events.
“It was a dangerous situation, just waiting for something bad to happen,” said Browne.
People living in the area have mixed feelings about the tree that caused so much damage.
“I've always considered it a menace,” Browne said. He also said for years, big limbs have fallen from the tree during inclement weather.
“It's a bummer. It's a beautiful tree. I love that tree,” said Wheelock.
Either way, it looks like the large tree may be on its way out. One neighbor said he spoke with the arborist and tree will be removed.
