Multiple injuries and 1 death after car crashes 15-feet down embankment in Kelso

KELSO, Wash. — One person is dead and others left with multiple injuries after a car went down an embankment in Kelso, Washington early Sunday morning, according to Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue.

Just before 11 a.m., firefighter from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue, Longview Fire Department, and Cowlitz County District 6 (Castle Rock) responded to reports of a car crash near North Pacific Avenue and Ostrander Avenue. Fire crews arrived used extraction tools to rescue trapped passengers found 15 feet down an embankment, and 50 feet off the road with scattered rocks across the road of travel, according to Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue.

Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue said one child was able to get out of the car, climb the embankment and flag down a driver who called 911. Fire crews used hydraulic extrication tools to cut two occupants out of the car. 

Two of the passengers, ages two and seven were taken to a hospital in Longview for minor injuries.  A nine-year-old child was flown by life flight to OHSU Hospital in Portland for multiple injuries from the car rolling over. One occupant, a man, was dead at the scene, according to Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue.

Officials have not yet released the relationships of occupants in the crash, or the name of the man who died.

No other injuries have been reported and no details have been released regarding what caused the crash.
