PORTLAND, Ore. – On this day when many older public school students are walking out of class in solidarity to protest gun violence in schools, some elementary students took what their principal calls age-appropriate action.
At Stephenson Elementary in Southwest Portland, it started with 300 kids dressing up in individual colors that eventually formed a rainbow in a stand for unity. Each grade wore a different color.
In the school hallway, a rainbow-colored bulletin board showcases their thoughts about unity and caring for each other, the themes of their day.
The color-coordinated kids formed the rainbow and sang as they marched around the playground.
“It’s a place where they’re cared for, where they are taken care of and loved,” said Stephenson principal Carlos Galindo. “And our message of unity and how we care for each other is important in today’s society and life.”
