GRESHAM, Ore. — A couple was taken to the hospital after their house caught on fire in Gresham Thursday morning. They were able to escape the home, thanks to a fire alarm and smoke detectors.

Firefighters responded to a fire alarm at the house near Northeast 176th Avenue and Northeast Flanders Street after 6 a.m. Neighbors also called 911. Crews smelled gasoline when they arrived, according to Gresham Fire Battalion Chief Mike Traeger. It appears the fire started in the garage and extended into the house. The roof of the garage was caving in as crews arrived. Firefighters were able to put the fire out. No other homes nearby were burned.

An ambulance took the couple, a man and a woman, to the hospital. Traeger said that the man suffered injuries, but doesn't know the extent of his injuries or his condition. He did not provide any details about the woman and her condition.

Neighbor Maria Hernandez shared the video below showing tall flames and large plumes of smoke.

A Gresham Fire investigator is looking into the cause of the fire.
