Curious comment brings police to Everett Herald

A curious online comment about the shooting of a duck hunter brought police to the offices of The Daily Herald newspaper in Everett.

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) -- A curious online comment about the shooting of a duck hunter brought police to the offices of The Daily Herald newspaper in Everett.

The Herald reports that detectives served a search warrant Thursday seeking information about whoever posted the comment regarding the Jan. 1 shooting to the newspaper's website.

The hunter and his brother were in an aluminum boat in Puget Sound, 500 yards off Stanwood, when he was hit.

The pair determined neither of their shotguns had gone off, and the Washington State Patrol crime lab determined that fragments removed from the victim's leg came from a bullet fired from a rifle.

Two days later, a reader commented on a story about the shooting on the paper's website. The comment said it was an accident, and that the shooter had been looking through his scope and didn't mean to fire.

Executive Editor Neal Pattison said the newspaper declined to turn over information about the post without a court order, but once police obtained one, it agreed to do so.
