Marion County deputies take man into custody after standoff

Deputies arrested the man, wanted for felony warrants, after a lengthy standoff.

MARION, Ore. — Marion County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man wanted for felony warrants after a lengthy standoff Tuesday night.

The man had barricaded himself in a home in the 5900 block of Stayton Road SE, in the town of Marion, southwest of Stayton.

Sheriff's deputies responded at 2:19 p.m. to a domestic disturbance call at the house. When deputies arrived, an adult male at the residence brandished a knife and hatchet at the deputies.

Deputies identified the man as John Leonard Rousseau, 51, and discovered he had outstanding felony warrants for his arrest.

A SWAT team was called and negotiators attempted to de-escalate the man, who police said was highly agitated. Rousseau also held SWAT members at bay with what appeared to be a small-caliber rifle.

People in residences close to the house were either evacuated or told to shelter in place.

Rousseau was finally detained by deputies at about 10:30 p.m. He was taken to Salem Hospital to be treated for minor injuries he sustained during the standoff.

After treatment, Rousseau will be booked at Marion County Jail on two outstanding warrants for the charges of criminal mischief and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He will also face three new counts of menacing and one for unlawful use of a weapon.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted on scene by the Stayton Police Department, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Mobile Crisis Response Team, the Marion County Inter-Agency SWAT Team and the Stayton Fire District.
